Crystal Motor for Arri 16-S and 16-M:

TCS TXM-22A

One-Piece Design

Quickly slips into the camera in place of your original motor. No tools are needed. Use your original tripod threads, power plug and run switch. Maintains the original lens height.

12 Volt DC Operation

Uses industry-standard 12 volt power. Only draws about 1.2 amps in a 16-S and 1.8 amps in a 16-M, about half the drain of your original motor. Your variable speed original motor is also quite happy operating on 12 volts. Your 8 volt Arri S magazine torque motor must be converted to 12 volts, however.

Six to Eight Crystal Speeds

All of the speeds are HMI compatible, for flickerless results under HMI or fluorescent lights, or discharge type street lights. For 60 Hz lamps, choose from 12, 20, 24, 30 and 40 FPS (frames per second.) For 50 Hz lamps, choose from  20, 25 and 50 FPS. Of course, for filming with daylight or high-amperage tungsten lights, any speeds can be used at will anywhere in the world. Speed switch is recessed to prevent damage or accidental change. Starts and stops with your camera's normal switch. A manual advance knob re-opens the finder when the camera stops out of the viewing position. Speed accuracy is ±3 ppm or .0003%.
NOTE: The 50 FPS speed is not guaranteed to be available unless you supply a higher battery voltage with a freshly charged battery. This speed is not claimed to work on 12 volts. NOTE: An additional 6 FPS speed is available but not marked on the dial, counter-clockwise from 12 FPS. It is not guaranteed to be flicker-free but may be useful for some purposes. (Earlier production TXM-22A motors did not have this speed.)

External Speed Control

Use your S or M for filming from video or computers, just like with a more modern and very expensive camera! A 3.5mm 3-conductor socket is provided for an accessory TCS Milliframe Controller, now discontinued. (No frame pulse, required for deluxe models of external controllers, or the TMC2 footage counter, is provided.) Operating range is about 5 to 45 FPS, or 40,000 speeds. Note that a speed correction is required: the actual desired speed multiplied by 0.6 is entered in the Milliframe Controller.

Sync Alarm

A red warning light shows if the built-in or external speed is not maintained.

Other data:

Housing extends back 2-3/8 inches from the seating plane. Precision CNC-machined housing is created from strong, solid chunks of aluminum. Weighs 17 oz. (0.5 kg.) Finished in baked Steel Grey powder-coat with silk screened legends. Gold plated power contact and speed switch for long-term reliability.

NOTE: This motor is only recommended for rental service, or use by students, if the users are cautioned as to the rather delicate nature of the speed switch. Instructions for the model TXM-22A are on the web here.
The user is reminded that physical damage (such as by trying to change the setting of the plastic recessed knob with a knife or ice pick) is not covered by the warranty.

Price of the TXM-22A crystal drive is $895.

A 12 volt conversion of your 400 foot Arri-S magazine torque motor is
$59.
