Detailed Specifications for TVT-16

Self-Contained Film to Video Transfer Machine

Replaces Elmo Transvideo.
The TVT-16 telecine models are designed for easily making highly acceptable video transfers from 16mm movie film.  The telecine projector, camera module and complete optical system are built-in. No slaving over a hot computer for hours... just plug into almost any DVD, MiniDV, VHS or other consumer or professional video recorder and monitor, and transfer or broadcast in real time as if copying a tape or disc.

No computer, no extra computer programs to learn, no tricky field and imaging lens alignments by the operator needed, no darkened room. Designed for continuous use in your high-volume transfer lab. Productivity is several times as great as with computer-dependent methods and still provides Frame by Frame scanning in real time, while each frame is stationary in the gate. There are no blended film frames, so there is no double image when the video is advanced field by field. NTSC pulldown is 2-3 at 24 FPS. *
In addition, there are both Silent and Sound flicker-free speeds in one machine, something that formerly required you to buy two of the TRV-16 Elmo machines in order to correctly transfer old home movies and historical film as well as modern commercial film.

Direct Imaging Picture Quality. A 1CCD video pickup with 752 or 768 pixel horizontal resolution and DSP (digital signal processing), a special macro lens system, sprocket drive and our exclusive technology assures a sharp, steady, flicker-free image. Video outputs are standard BNC (and consumer RCA video with an adapter,) also there is a Y/C (S-Video) socket for DVD, Mini-DV, Digital8 and Super-VHS recording. The speeds are crystal controlled to .005% accuracy, eliminating any flicker adjustment by the user. The exposure level can be set fully manually if desired for running density corrected film prints, or two automatic modes are provided: Peak Sensing for most subjects, and Center Weighted Averaging for strongly backlit dark film, all with the ability to correct up to two stops of excess density (dark underexposed film.) A new high power solid state LED array with cooling fan is used and it is expected to last for tens of thousands of hours, or years of average use. The diffused light source "fills in" film scratches by providing light at a wide angle to replace light that is refracted by a scratch, making the scratch less visible. We use the special jigs, software and password to make adjustments to the camera DSP (digital signal processing) for optimum results.
If you need an IEEE-1394 Firewire digital signal, this can be had through an accessory Canopus
ADVC55 digital converter box.

A 3CCD version is offered for users who demand the ultimate in resolution and color fidelity. This utilizes a compact Hitachi HV-D30 or HV-D30P camera.

Two Crystal Running Speeds. This is an exclusive Tobin invention and something nobody else has. Film that was photographed at either 16 or 24 FPS (frames per second) can be run with natural looking screen action very close to the original speed, and no trace of flicker. For NTSC * video output, you can switch select between 24 FPS for commercially made film, and 15 FPS for old historical or amateur film. For PAL video output, the two speeds are 25 FPS for commercially made film, and 16-2/3 FPS for old or amateur film. No fiddly speed tuning by the operator to minimize flicker is needed.

* - For clarity, the NTSC speeds are rounded off to nominal values. The actual running speeds are locked to the 59.94 Hz video field rate and therefore the nominal 24 and 15 speeds are exactly 23.976 and 14.985 FPS respectively. On special order we can make an NTSC machine with the silent speed of 20 (19.98) FPS instead of 15.

Maximum Film Safety. Time-proven Autoload automatic threading. A trap door opens to eject the film if a splice breaks above the film gate. A three-tooth pulldown claw distributes stress for minimal perforation wear. Automatic loop restorer if the lower loop is lost. Reel capacity is 2300 feet (700 meters) for up to one hour shows at 24 FPS, with 1600 feet the suggested maximum.

Audio Reproduction. The TVT-16 models include standard optical (photographic) audio playback that is fixed at a -10 dBv level through an RCA phono jack for most non-broadcast applications, and also a +4 dBu balanced XLR line output for broadcast and professional installations. The sound head uses the popular BAK 4 volt .75 amp exciter lamp which is made by several companies and is also kept in stock by TCS.

Footage Counter. An LED (light emitting diode) 4-digit film length counter adds in forward and subtracts in reverse, for accurate guess-free billing, with no customer arguments if you can write an exact figure on their bill. A reset button manually zeroes the count at the beginning of the reel. On overseas shipments, we can configure the TVT to count in meters instead of feet.

Heavy Duty Construction.
Operation is on universal power of 100 to 240 volts AC, 50 or 60 Hz with built-in switching type power supplies for efficiency. 1CCD Camera module specs: 768 x 494 NTSC, 752 x 582 PAL, 480 line rated resolution, 48 dB s/n ratio. Framing adjustment. Non-slip rubber feet. Detachable IEC power cord is easily swapped for foreign types. Manual advance knob. Bell & Howell mechanism of high reliability and durability is inspected, re-machined and heavily modified to our specifications. Worm gears, which would eventually develop cracks, are all replaced with new crack resistant ones. Mechanism and drive motor hours counter. Shipping weight about 35 pounds Oversize-1, or dimensional weight higher if shipped by air. Takeup reel of 400' (122 meters) size and all cables (except XLR) and instructions are included. A compact built-in 3CCD camera with higher 800 TV line resolution, higher sensitivity, lower noise and somewhat better color is now offered as an option.

Please specify NTSC video output (USA type) or PAL video output (European type.) Film counter for USA units measures feet, and overseas units can be set to measure meters. Let us know your preference. 8mm or super-8 versions are here.

Component outputs are available with 3CCD cameras for an additional
$100. Kindly indicate whether you want RGB or
Y, B-Y, R-Y (same as Y Pb Pr) signals. The Composite and Y/C outputs are not available with this option.

Specifications and availability are subject to change without notice. Instructions (without pictures) are here.
TVT-16 Testimonials Page is here.  3CCD camera instructions are here. Magnetic sound reproduction is rarely available owing to a shortage of parts. If this extra cost feature is essential for you, please inquire and we will let you know the present situation.

Expendables: Replacement sound exciter lamps, type BAK (200 hours rated life, Krypton gas filled)
$10 or you can also use type BRS (50 hours rated life) $2.50. In practice the lamps last much longer owing to being run at reduced voltage.
