The Arri cameras are difficult mostly because the mirror shutter does not block all light, and if the camera is stopped for more than about a second you get an out-of-frame fogging with diffused light that leaks around the shutter. This makes it necessary to have an extra "capping shutter" in front of the lens.
Also the S/M motor turns 3 times per frame, and there is not a definite relationship with the shutter. You would have to re-zero the stopping place of the motor every time you attached it. Since the motor drive coupling is smooth, it can also slip out of timing and begin stopping in the wrong place without warning.
The best option in 16mm seems to be to buy a Bolex with 1:1 shaft and our TTL motor as the reasonable cost and readily available alternative. In many cases, reflex viewing is not essential. Besides the Reflex models Rex-4, Rex-5, SB and SBM the less expensive non-reflex models S4, M4 and M5 with side viewfinder (which is very accurate) will also serve.
For 35mm we suggest investigating using an Eclair CM3 or Konvas instead, for similar reasons. Their shutters completely block all light when closed. Links to non-TCS conversions of these cameras to accept the TTL motor (not verified, authorized or warranted by TCS) are at the bottom of this Catalog Index page. We personally have not seen any of these conversions or evaluated their operation.
